Getting Organized With Kim

Laura's Style would like to introduce Kim Corey of Finely Sorted. Kim is an organizer. What does she organize you ask? Absolutely anything you want or need her assistance with. I happened to need help with organizing my dresser drawers. I had way too much "stuff" and too little room. Kim began with assessing my "space".  She took everything out one drawer at a time and asked me if I used everything in each one. Fortunately I am not a hoarder. I usually don't purchase anything unless I need it and if I don't need it and I buy it anyway, I end up purging something in order to fit the new item in it's place. Regardless of my frugal ways I somehow managed to accumulate more "stuff" than I had time to wear. She asked me how often I did my laundry? I told her once a week. And I don't wash my pj's every time I wear them. So why do I need ten tops to wear to bed when I am only wearing my three favorite ones? The answer is simple. I don't need them! Keeping this theory in mind I was able to get rid of lots of things that were just cluttering up my drawers (and my life.) Kim only stayed for three hours, but her information and inspiration will last me a life time.

Kim was also very respectful when it came to items of sentimental value. Notice the pacifier on the dresser laying on top of the little boys striped shirt. I told her that these items were special to me. The pacifier ("nite nite") belonged to my son Devin when he was a baby (he is 15 now). And the shirt belonged to my brother Mark and my son also wore it when he was a toddler. Kim asked me if I enjoyed stumbling across these items once in a while in my drawers. I told her yes. She kept them in random drawers for me and did not encourage me to get rid of them. Later on we also ran across a couple of burp cloths that were my sons when he was little. His "raggies" he used to call them. She kept those in the mix too :)

All of my drawers are now organized. Kim took everything out and put everything back in categories. Tights and socks are by color and texture. Undergarments are by frequency of wear (the ones I wear the most are most accessible up front) and by style. Workout wear and pj's are by category and season. Kim folded my items and stacked them sideways so that I would be able to see everything I had instead of  thumbing through everything to find the one item I want.

Kim stayed for three hours and we managed to fill up one big garbage bag of stuff  that I never wore and was cluttering up my drawers (and my life).

Kim has inspired me to get organized in every area of my life. Everything should have it's place and be accessible, otherwise why do you have it? If it's something you never use, just get rid of it! Before Kim came over I thought I was pretty well organized, but now I see what I could be doing differently to make my life even easier. I plan on blogging more about organizing in the future.

I need to do that. I'm a teacher, so I'll have time to do it this summer. I'll add it to the list...
